One of the great doubts that students present is related to the theoretical basis of the research. What are they used for? Why are they used? and Are they obligatory in the thesis of degree ?. If any of these questions is similar to any of your doubts, I invite you to continue reading, since they will be clarified in this article .
What are the Theoretical Bases?
In simple words, the theoretical basis in the degree work corresponds to the content that will sustain the research to be carried out. They contain theories and concepts of authors in the investigation. Its development is based on the various variables that are handled in the research and is part of Chapter II, forming the theoretical framework. Having correlation with the title of the investigation.
Why are the Theoretical Bases used?
As already mentioned, they are used since the research is based on the theories related to the topic that is being worked on. Developed by authors who studied and presented them before. Through them you will support to solve the problem.
Are the Theoretical Bases obligatory in the Degree Thesis?
If they are, because by means of them you will formalize your investigation. In addition, the methodology determines it according to the theoretical framework. Without them you will not have an orientation to follow in your thesis and it would only become information on paper.
Definition of the theoretical basis of an investigation
The Theoretical Bases, theoretical or conceptual referents, corresponds to a chapter within the structure of any investigation. Especially for those of university degree, in which it is supported by different theories of specialist authors in different areas.
For his part, Tamayo states that “The theoretical framework expands the description of the problem. Integrates the theory with the investigation and their mutual relations ».
Therefore, it allows us to specify what the problem is that will be developed, being able to detect where the weaknesses of the problem are.
What content or theory should I develop in my theoretical bases of an investigation?
Transcribing a book by a certain author in the thesis is not necessary. One of the most common mistakes is wanting to transcribe theories and quotations in the theoretical bases that ultimately have no basis. This only occupies space and pages within the content of the thesis of degree or dissertation to be delivered.
I’ll give you some suggestions that can help you determine which theory you should use:
Case # 01:
Diagnose what is the preferred flavor of ice cream in children in 3rd grade, section 2A. Turn tomorrow, at school, XX, located in the XX city, of the XX state and XX country.
Based on the previous title the theory should contain: diagnose, taste, ice cream, children and within each word, the word classification, types, importance.
Case # 02:
If your title corresponds to a proposal of a web portal to improve communication in the educational institution. The theory should contain: Communication, everything related to the web and what program you will use to make this portal.
Case # 03:
If the title on the other hand is Strategies to optimize the internal control of the purchasing department, of the company, located in the city XX, of the state XX and country XX.
You must develop: Strategies, Control, internal control, department, purchases and like the previous one, classification, types, importance, functions, rules and procedures established within the department.
Remember that the idea is to base the proposal, so you must include in this section what you are going to propose, such as rules, procedures, laws among others.
What are the criteria for the selection of the theoretical bases?
I will take to answer this question to Vara:
You searched for books on the subject that are updated. Universities have many virtual updates in their physical libraries that can help you.
Use a database and look for books, articles and references at least 5 years ago.
Consult specialized magazines at least 5 years ago.
Search for research and thesis from your university, other universities and countries. They will also provide you with information such as research background.
Consult with specialists in the field. Especially if you work with areas of health or scientific advances.
Investigate which aspects and variables have been investigated, how they have done it and where.
The ideal is that you put two (2) or three (3) theories, that complement each other, not that they are totally opposite, that way you are demonstrating with your theory the “must be” or “how it should be”.
And most importantly, it uses references and bibliographies taken from:
- Digital or printed books updated.
- Scientific articles
- Scientific magazines
- International Standards
- And until other previous works of universities.
Do not use blog or any type of information on the internet that the authors do not have, otherwise it will not work for you.
If you rely on national laws or regulations, or of your country, you must include them in the Legal Bases, of which I will speak in a future article.
The theoretical basis will allow you to have a clear idea of what will be the proposal developed to solve the problem you raised in your research. Adapting them according to the need or weakness that you managed to detect with the initial observation and the result obtained from your research instruments. You can make your conclusions and recommendations based on “the should be” according to theories already tested before.
